Beckham always ready to lead

David Beckham insists he will always answer England’s call to be captain after taking the armband against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday night.

Beckham led England out for their 3-0 win in Port of Spain, with the cynical view being that it will help gain Jack Warner’s vote for the Football Association’s 2018 World Cup bid.

Warner, from Trinidad, is FIFA vice-president and holds an important vote - and he has urged the FA to use Beckham in their bid.

“I was surprised and didn’t expect it,” Beckham said.

“But I’ll always answer the call and be available for my country and captain them as well - it was a surprise but I am honoured to do so.”

Gareth Barry opened the scoring with his first England goal, then Jermain Defoe scored either side of half-time.

“It was a tough performance and the manager was telling us before the game that even though it was a friendly we had to take it seriously,” he added.

“It was the centenary game for them but they wanted to beat England and we had to put in a good performance and I think we did that.

“The players in the camp are motivated and whether we have got experienced players or young players we have to play as one.

“The respect is there [for manager Fabio Capello] and there for one another and that is how it needs to be and the qualifiers are the big thing for us now.”

Defoe was delighted to get back on the scoresheet, his first international goals since 2006.

He told BBC1: “I enjoyed it. It was important to get the win and I’m delighted to get two goals.

“To play for your country is the best thing in the world. The lads have had long seasons but they’re all here and we’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

“I just want to keep learning. When a new manager comes in everyone starts on the same level and to get two goals, I’m delighted.”

Beckham Helps Lead England Over United States

David Beckham is doing his best to dazzle American soccer fans with his precision free kicks. He also is making sure they don’t forget about them back in England.

Beckham’s perfect curling ball set up John Terry for the go-ahead goal in the 38th minute, and England outclassed the United States 2-0 in an exhibition game at Wembley.

While England may not have been good enough to qualify for the 16-team European Championship next month, it easily dispatched the Americans on the world’s most famous soccer field.

Steven Gerrard scored the second goal in the 59th minute off a through-ball from Gareth Barry that exposed the U.S. defense. With 10 minutes to go, England’s long-suffering fans were belting out choruses of “God Save the Queen.”

The match drew 71,233 to Wembley, the lowest figure in any of England’s eight games at the 90,000-capacity arena, which opened in 2007 following years of reconstruction.

The United States, whose five-match unbeaten streak ended, dropped to 2-7 against the English, winning at the 1950 World Cup and in a 1993 exhibition game at Foxborough, Mass. This matchup came three years to the day after England’s 2-1 win at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

Beckham was given a standing ovation before kickoff when he received a golden cap from English great Bobby Charlton in recognition of Beckham’s 100th international appearance, in March against France.

Landon Donovan, Beckham’s Los Angeles Galaxy teammate, missed out on a chance to become the fourth-youngest player with 100 international appearances. The 26-year-old didn’t dress because of a tight groin.

The loss began a series of tough tests for U.S. coach Bob Bradley’s team ahead of the start of World Cup qualifying against Barbados on June 15. The Americans play next Wednesday at Spain, then face Argentina on June 8 at East Rutherford, N.J.

Fabio Capello, who took over as England’s manager after the team failed to qualify for Euro 2008, fielded nearly all his top stars. Beckham only played the first half, but that was enough to give Capello plenty of reassurance that the 33-year-old midfielder remains in contention for World Cup qualifiers in the autumn.

Beckham, who joined the Galaxy last year after starring for Manchester United and Real Madrid, nearly put England ahead in the 11th minute, when Gerrard tapped his free kick past goalkeeper Tim Howard. But Greek referee Kyros Vassaras ordered the kick to be retaken.

Terry, whose missed penalty kick cost Chelsea the European Champions League title last week, scored when he outjumped several defenders inside the penalty area and beat a diving Howard with a powerful header. Barry, who had just entered the game, created the second goal when his cutting pass to Gerrard caught defender Oguchi Onyewu upfield. Gerrard beat substitute goalkeeper Brad Guzan with a sidefooted shot inside the left post.

The Americans had few good chances at only their second match at Wembley _ the first was a 2-0 loss in September 1994.

Eddie Johnson came close to scoring early in the second half, taking a cross inside the penalty area from Heath Pearce and sending a shot just wide of the post.

Eddie Lewis produced another chance in the 80th minute, going past Joe Cole on the right flank and sending a dangerous cross in front of the net that was tipped away by goalkeeper David James.

Bentley out to get Beckham

David Bentley has warned David Beckham he is determined to end his England career.

The Blackburn Rovers winger will go head-to-head with Beckham for a place in manager Fabio Capello’s midfield for the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign, which begins in September.

Both players will be granted chances to stake their claim in England’s end-of-season friendlies against the United States at Wembley on Wednesday and Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain on Sunday.

Bentley, 23, has age on his side - Beckham is 10 years older - and is also better placed to impress Capello since the ex-Manchester United star’s departure for Major League Soccer.

But Bentley is taking nothing for granted and insists only consistently impressive performances will ensure he becomes Beckham’s long-term successor.

He said: “David’s loved by everyone, isn’t he? I admire him as well, of course, and the world loves him.

“He’s great as a man and a player and he will be difficult to get past him because he’s got everything. But I’ll be trying my hardest to do just that.

“David has reached incredibly high levels throughout his career and I really respect him for that but I am still here to take his place. That’s one of the reasons that these are big games for me - I have to perform in them.

“For someone like me, just starting out in my international career, I have a lot to prove. Every time I go out on the pitch at this stage I have something to prove to the media, the fans and the manager, especially in games like this.

“There’s no point in me just talking a good game, I have to do it on the pitch and find a little bit more within me.”

Bentley is steadily winning over the England fans who jeered him during his first appearance for the national side after the former Arsenal trainee’s decision not to travel to the European under-21 championships last summer.

The winger cited “tiredness” for his refusal to travel to Holland and he was left out of the full England squad for a friendly against Germany at Wembley last August.

But his impressive form for Rovers last season - he scored nine goals in helping the club finish seventh in the Premier League - has helped win over the doubters and Bentley believes he will blossom under the tough love regime of Capello.

“You make decisions in life and I made that one (about the under-21 tournament) - I stick by it but it’s in the past now,” he added. “It’s been great to be involved.

“To play for England is fantastic and there’s no better feeling than having the new gaffer put you in his side for his first few games.

“Mr Capello has been great. You come here to work hard and to develop your game. He wants people to get as much out of every training session as they can and not just go through the motions, which is at it should be.

“It’s enjoyable and it should breed success for the future, I hope.”
