David Beckham ahead of Elton John on Forbes celebrity list

David Beckham has replaced his friend Sir Elton John as one of the 10 most powerful celebrities in the world.

The England footballer has jumped from 15th to fifth on this year’s annual Forbes celebrity list.

Beckham, who has earned £25 million ($50 million) in the past year, comes four places ahead of JK Rowling, the creator of the phenomenally successful Harry Potter books, who made £125 million ($300 million) in the previous 12 months alone.

Beckham’s wife, Victoria, appears as part of the Spice Girls in 50th place. Sir Elton, who was in the top 10 last year, is absent from this year’s list in a sign that his popularity and earning power could be on the wane.

As well as looking at earnings over the past year, the Forbes list takes into account the number of magazine covers the celebrity appeared on, their internet presence, their presence in newspaper stories and the frequency with which they are mentioned on television and radio.

David Beckham’s latest blog
Hi everyone,

It was good to get back to the MLS and get a win against Colorado Rapids in my first game since returning from England duty. I felt after the thrashing they gave us in the first game of the season we had something to prove and in the first half we played some brilliant soccer. At 3-0 up just after half time we were cruising and maybe we got complacent and let them back into the game, but we managed to hang on and win, which is a testament to the team and the winning spirit that Ruud Gullit and the coaching staff have brought to the club.
It’s great to look at the table and see us sitting at the top. The Western Conference is very tight though, so we need to make sure that we’re focused on trying to win every game from now on, starting with San Jose Earthquakes this Saturday.

I was a guest on a Jimmy Kimmel special called Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night, which was on just before the LA Lakers v Boston Celtics NBA finals. It was great fun and, of course, as a Lakers fan I was pleased to see them win.

That’s all for now.

Beckham leads All-Star fan voting

Nearly a month into the balloting, Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham is the overwhelming leader in fan voting for the 2008 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game. Fans can participate by visiting www.MLSnet.com and are able to cast up to 10 votes per day. The voting closes July 2. The online fan balloting will comprise one quarter of the MLS All-Star First XI selections, with coaches and general managers (25 percent), players (25 percent) and media (25 percent) all getting a say in who is named to the First XI, which will consist of one goalkeeper, three defenders, five midfielders and two forwards.

Those selected will participate in the 13th annual MLS All-Star Game and take on West Ham United of the English Premier League at BMO Field in Toronto, July 24 at 7 p.m. The game will be televised in the U.S. and Canada on ESPN 2, Telefutura and CBC Sports.

A healthy Beckham has four goals and five assists and is ninth in the league in scoring for the Galaxy, which is the highest-scoring team in Major League Soccer.

Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan, the leading scorer in MLS, is tops among a talented list of forwards, followed by Toronto FC’s Danny Dichio and the New York Red Bulls strike force of Juan Pablo Angel and Jozy Altidore in a tight race.

Mark Wahlberg: David Beckham should go back to the UK

Mark Wahlberg is unhappy that David Beckham and wife Victoria have moved down the road from him.

The actor reckons Posh and Becks have brought unwanted media attention to the exclusive LA suburb.

‘That f***er lives down the street from me, man!’ Mark, 37, tells the Daily Star.

‘He has to go back to the UK, because he has the paparazzi all over my house!

‘The two of them – Beckham and Posh – have paparazzi everywhere.’

David, 33, and Victoria, 34, moved to the States last year when the footie hunk signed for LA Galaxy.

David Beckham attacked by ‘lovestruck’ male fan

David Beckham received a new first in his playing career today when a ‘love struck’ male fan ran onto the field to hug and high-five him, as his LA Galaxy side clung to a 3-2 lead over the Colorado Rapids in America’s Major League Soccer.

A shocked Beckham looked on as the fan was knocked down by Galaxy teammate Chris Klein and then pinned by one of Beckham’s suited security men.

But ever the gentleman, after realising he was in no danger, Beckham helped pull the fan to his feet before the youngster was taken away.

“I was slightly concerned when I first saw him running at me because he didn’t have a smile on his face and he didn’t have a Galaxy shirt on,” Beckham told the LA Times website.

“So I didn’t know if he was going to come and give me a hug or something else.

“These things happen in games all over the world. Luckily, he just wanted to give me a high five and that was the end of it.”

Bckham returns in Galaxy win

Alvaro Pires and Edson Buddle scored first-half goals to help David Beckham get a win in his return as the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the Colorado Rapids 3-2 on Saturday night.Ely Allen added an early second-half goal for the Galaxy (5-4-2), who moved into sole possession of first place in the Western Conference.

Colin Clark and Herculez Gomez scored second-half goals for Colorado (5-6-0).

Beckham missed last week’s 2-0 loss at Toronto as he was away with the English national team.

Beckham helped the Galaxy get on the scoreboard 4 minutes in as he swung a free kick into the penalty area from some 40 yards out on the right side. The ball bounced off two players before Pires knocked it past Colorado goalie Preston Burpo for his first MLS goal.

Buddle doubled the Galaxy’s lead in the 32nd minute. With Colorado defender Facundo Erpen playing him closely, Buddle dribbled the ball into the penalty area and rifled a shot from the right side of the box into the back of the net.

Alan Gordon and Erpen were each ejected near the end of the first half after a brief altercation.

Allen took a pass from Peter Vagenas in the 50th minute and slotted home a shot from just inside the penalty area for his first career MLS goal.

Clark took a pass from Omar Cummings and slipped a 12-yard shot past Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin in the 73rd minute. Former Galaxy star Gomez poked in a goal in the 82nd minute to cut into the lead.

Landon Donovan, who leads MLS with nine goals, missed his second consecutive league game. Donovan is with the United States national team for Sunday’s game in New York against Argentina.

Beckham returned after missing one match with his national team.

Beckham bought vineyard for Victoria for her birthday

Former Spice Girl Victoria, who recently turned 34, is set to start bottling her own wine, after the soccer star paid a seven figure sum for the plot in California.

A source told Britain’s The Sun newspaper: “The Beckhams became wine buffs when David played in Spain. The vineyard went down a storm with Victoria, she was delighted.”

The vineyard is located in the Napa Valley, approximately an hour flight from the couple’s Los Angeles home.

David, who plays for Los Angeles Galaxy, is said to have spent months researching vineries to find one that was just right for his wife.

He apparently unveiled the present to Victoria by presenting her with a bottle with her name on the label while on holiday in the area last month.

At present it is thought the wine will not be made commercially available and the couple - who have employed a team to run the vineyard - will keep it for family and friends.

Other celebrity vinery owners include Sting, actor Gerard Depardieu and film director Francis Ford Coppola - who was one of the first famous people to invest in the Napa Valley.

Beckinsale’s daughter starts dating Victoria’s son

Actress Kate Beckinsale is keen on fixing up her nine-year-old daughter with Victoria Beckham’s eldest son Brooklyn. The ‘Pearl Harbour’ star admits she doesn’t want her daughter Lily, also nine, to experiment with boys when she is older.

But the actress admitted that she wouldn’t mind if Lily dated Beckham’s eldest son. “I am dreading the day Lily brings home a boy. But she and the Beckham boys get on really well,” Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

“So if she did have to have a boyfriend, then I suppose Brooklyn would get my seal of approval,” she added.
